Mani Challenged? You Can DIY!

Mani Challenged? You Can DIY!

Quick fix for FOSM (fear of self manis)

Salon manicures do tend to look better and last longer than a DIY, but with a little patience and practice, anyone (including you!) can succeed on your own.

Simply start with clean, polish-free nails and follow these helpful tips from the mani pros at KISS.

Get in shape:
Oval, coffin, and stiletto nails are the hot trend, but square and squoval are the way to go;  the wider nail shape makes them sturdier and less prone to breaking. For filing nails, best practice is to work in one direction along tips and at sides; sawing the file back and forth roughens nail tips.

Prep work:
Be a nudger–avoid cutting cuticles. Apply cuticle oil, olive oil or Vaseline, then gently nudge cuticles back with a cuticle stick. Next, wipe nails with nail polish remover or alcohol to remove any residue before polishing.

Paint job:
Go thin–thick layers of polish take much longer to dry and are prone to smudging. Apply thin coats of polish, allowing each layer to dry for a minute in between. A base coat, two coats of color and a top coat-applied in thin layers are a must for a long-lasting finish.  For application, manicurists use three strokes–one down the middle then one on each side, so it’s a good rule to follow.

Dry time:
Ideally, relax and wait 15-30 minutes for polish to totally dry (as long as you applied thin coats). To speed dry, wait a few minutes after polishing, then use a blast of cold air from a fan or a blow dryer (if it has a cool shot feature) for a few minutes. Give another 5 minutes to dry, then brush nails with a quick dry product.

Mani maintenance:
Now that you’ve mastered a DIY manicure, help it last by wearing waterproof lined gloves when washing dishes or doing any messy housework. Also, use hand cream and groom cuticles with a dose of cuticle oil or vitamin E every day. Another option is to go with imPRESS; the Press-on Manicure is faster than applying nail polish, and it’s literally maintenance free!
